Head Meat Cutter

Position Summary:

Assist customers and cut meat for retail sale. Manage and maximize the financial performance of the meat department, train Meat Cutters to become Head Meat Cutters, and maintain excellence in customer service. Fred Meyer also requires that all associates perform all tasks in a safe manner consistent with corporate policies and state and federal laws.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Model "Customer 1st" behavior; deliver and encourage other associates to deliver excellent customer service
  • Prepare and cut meat
  • Sell product to customers; teach/demonstrate selling skills
  • Write a quality tour
  • Communicate with Food Mgr on weekly scheduling process
  • Organize merchandising on sales floor; implement weekly merchandising notes
  • Quality ordering functions
  • Maintain awareness of overstock/understock conditions to maintain ordering system integrity
  • Maintain freight receiving/stocking standards, adherence to Fred Meyer disciplinary guidelines, Associate participation in mandatory training programs
  • Comply with meat code date policy, shrink control guidelines, signing and recovery standards, corporate policies, Food Safety guidelines and standards
  • Plan ads with Food Mgmnt; react with urgency to changing sales opportunities; complete planograms
  • Prepare/submit seasonal critiques for Merchandising Coordinator
  • Assist Food Mgmnt in interviewing and hiring
  • Communicate competitor's pricing activity in specific market to Merchandising Coordinator
  • Maintain and audit in-store price changes; authorize any manager discretion markdowns
  • Audit/take action on price audits and file maintenance exceptions
  • Promote and follow Company initiatives
  • Perform duties of meat/service fish counter clerk, as necessary
  • Complete the following tasks as part of daily routine:

o Rework product; Set up service case; Clean work area

o Conduct markdowns as needed throughout the day

o Write cutting list and produce items for display according to Company policy

o Cut product for service meat case lineup for next day; Grind all shop trim

o Fill/face freezer; level meat case

o Follow up with Food Manager or Person in Charge (PIC) prior to leaving for the day to verify merchandising selection/appropriate fill levels

o Break down freight; organize meat freezer/cooler

  • Supervise and coach direct reports in the performance of their duties; complete performance reviews and provide feedback to direct reports
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation

Minimum Position Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus a minimum of two years retail meat cutting experience; or combination of relevant education and experience
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Ability to pass drug test
  • Ability to organize/prioritize tasks/projects
  • Ability to work weekends on a regular basis, work any shift and work overtime as needed
  • Accuracy/attention to detail
  • Ability to work within set time frames and fixed deadlines
  • Familiarity with meat cutting terms and processes
  • Meat Cutter's license (King County only)
  • Any licenses or certificates required by federal and/or state
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to travel independently

Desired Previous Job Experience:

  • Knowledge of Fred Meyer policies, procedures, and organizational structure
  • Related retail experience
