Corporate Microbiologist, Food Safety and Quality

Position Summary

Provide technical leadership to assure control of potential microbiological hazards in Kroger manufacturing, distribution and retail store operations. Serve as a subject matter expert in foodborne pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms that could pose concerns in our food processing and handling environments. Develop, implement and assess microbiological-based programs, policies and procedures. Demonstrate the companys core values of respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion and safety.

Essential Job Functions

  • Influence Food Safety Culture within the Kroger network through education, training
  • Assist in the development of the Food Safety strategic and operating plans to ensure they are aligned with business objectives and available resources
  • Establish networking relationships with external technical experts from industry, universities, governmental agencies, and suppliers to stay abreast of all current learnings and technologies in Food Safety and Quality
  • Develop, review/revise, issue, and assess Kroger Food Safety policies/standards and microbiological methods and procedures
  • Develop, maintain and communicate the microbiological ingredient specification database; ensure uniformity across commodities and adherence to specifications
  • Ensure that all Process Preventive Controls, as part of FSMA, are properly validated and represented in all Food Safety Plans
  • Conduct microbiological risk assessments, challenge and validation studies utilizing scientific literature and Microbiological Risk Assessment and Modeling tools
  • Develop and administer training to manufacturing and retail associates focusing on food safety and quality initiatives including HACCP, FSMA, EMP, sanitation, shelf-life, and validation and verification
  • Develop EMP for all manufacturing facilities; ensure training and proper execution, track results, and resolve issues by providing sanitation and GMP guidance
  • Design, manage, execute, interpret and report on scientific studies that drive innovation, solve operational issues, and meet regulatory requirements
  • Provide technical expertise, direction and guidance, based on leading edge scientific solutions, to Quality, PD, manufacturing and retail to solve food safety, sanitation, and quality issues, and assist with product launches
  • Minimum Position Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Food Microbiology, Food Science or Microbiology
  • 4+ years Microbiology laboratory hands-on experience
  • 8+ years food safety and food microbiology experience
  • Proficient in FSMA, HACCP, GMP, Sanitation, EMP
  • Proven proficiency required to direct/execute microbiological studies including: pathogen testing, rapid methods, lethality testing, challenge studies, shelf-life studies, environmental monitoring, sanitation assessments
  • Proven track record of project management skills and leadership accountability
  • Desired Previous Experience/Education

  • Any regulatory experience working with or for FDA, USDA, or State food governing bodies
  • Doctorate Degree in Food Microbiology, Food Science or Microbiology
  •
